Finding a great travel reward credit card depends on a number of factors, one of which is the cardholders own requirements for travel rewards.
Therefore it is difficult to single out any one card as the 'best' card.
However, certain cards do have an advantage over others, and the criteria is fairly simple:
- flexibility
- a good air miles program
- reasonable interest rates
- low or no annual fee
When it comes to travel reward credit cards, Canadians don't get any breaks. With high annual fees and higher interest rates compared to their American counterparts, cardholders in Canada have little to choose from. Here are the top two travel reward credit cards for Canadians:
-
Capital One No Hassle Rewards Platinum MasterCard
Not quite as good as its American counterpart, the No Hassle Rewards Platinum MasterCard is still an impressive travel reward credit card. The purchase to points ratio is $1 for every mile earned. The reward miles can be redeemed with any airline, and they never expire, nor are there any blackout dates or seat restrictions. There is no annual fee, and the interest rate is currently at a slightly high, but not ridiculous 17.9%.
-
CIBC Aerogold Visa
Next on the list is the CIBC Aerogold Visa card. This travel reward credit card is connected to the Aeroplan travel reward program, which is run by Air Canada. That does create a restriction in its use, however, Air Canada flies just about everywhere from major Canadian cities. The card does have a hefty annual fee however, currently at $120.00 per year, and a very high interest currently at 19.5%. The point to purchase ratio is one Aeroplan point for every $1 spent, but signing up for the card gives you an instant bonus of 15,000 points. Also, there are many vendors who have an arrangement with Aeroplan whereby cardholders earn 1.5 points per dollar spent.
There are several other travel reward credit cards available for Canadians, but the rest of them are pretty much neck to neck in what they offer. There is a rumour that the Blue Sky American Express card may be making an appearance in Canada soon, and providing they don't change the variables too much (as with the Capital One card) then that would be a great contender for the Canadian card holder.
