Best Travel Reward Credit Card for Americans

Finding a great travel reward credit card depends on a number of factors, one of which is the cardholders own requirements for travel rewards.

Therefore it is difficult to single out any one card as the 'best' card.

However, certain cards do have an advantage over others, and the criteria is fairly simple:

With that in mind, here are three of the top travel reward credit cards to use:

  1. Capital One No Hassle Miles Rewards Card

This is a really great travel rewards card. There is no annual fee, the purchase to reward ratio is 1.25 miles for every $1 spent, the interest rate is currently a very reasonable 13.4%, and there is an introductory offer of 0% interest until September 2008. Air miles are redeemable on any airline without blackout dates, and you can fly for as few as 15,000 miles. The card can also be used to purchase merchandise, such as consumer electronics. They also offer 1% cash back on purchases, with no limit on the amount of cash back that can be earned.

The one drawback to this card is that you must have excellent credit to qualify.

  2. Citi Premier Pass Card

This is another great card. No annual fee, a 0% introductory offer for 12 months, then a regular interest rate currently at 13.49%. The purchase to reward ratio is one mile for every dollar spent. Rewards may be redeemed for travel, merchandise or even gift certificates. First use of the card will give the card holder 5000 points, and the travel points can be used on any airline. The card also has many side benefits like travel accident insurance and auto rental insurance. Two drawbacks to the travel program are that the card holder can only earn 100,000 points maximum in a year (not a huge disadvantage for most people!), and if the card is dormant for more than three years you will lose the points.

Once again excellent credit is required to qualify.

  3. Blue Sky American Express

Blue Sky from American Express allows the card holder to get discounts on any flight, hotel or rental car at any time, without seat restrictions or blackout dates. The purchase to reward ratio is one point for every $1 charged, There is a 0% six month introductory rate for those transferring a balance to the card, and a reasonable interest rate thereafter. There is no annual fee either. The good thing about this card is that the rewards points can be used at any time, in increments of 7500 points. Only one point redemption can be used at a time, but the flexibility this offers is unique to most travel reward credit cards. What it means is that even if you find a great deal on travel, you can still use your points to further discount the fare.
