Cheap Travel Insurance
The quest for cheap travel insurance exposes one of the common characteristics of many travellers: trying to get as much as possible for as little as possible. This is not in and of itself a bad thing, since we all love a bargain. However, when it comes to insurance coverage, cheap is not necessarily a good thing. It may seem like a matter of semantics, but what we really want is 'relatively inexpensive' travel insurance. What that means, as opposed to cheap, is that the ratio between the amount of coverage provided and the amount that has to be paid in is a good balance, and will give you what you need in the event of an emergency.
Cheap travel insurance is a relative term since there are so many factors that determine what the coverage will cost. The age of the traveller, intended destination, and duration of the trip all play a part. As well, activities that the traveller intends to engage in determine the cost. If you are off on a business trip to Panama, and intend to play a little golf on the side, you will not be charged the same as if you were headed for two weeks of white water kayaking, hiking and scuba diving in Costa Rica. That is not to say, however, that the second option will necessarily be expensive, but the way in which the costs are determined will change the outcome.
Insurance companies calculate odds. They are in the business of collecting money for potential future problems, but hope to not have to pay anything out. They use sophisticated statistics to determine the likelihood of a payout, and from that determine part of the cost. They also must calculate costs that are incurred as a result of foreign transactions, transportation costs in the host country, medical and evacuation costs, and the fees and licenses required to repatriate a body from that country. It is a complicated business, but also very lucrative for them. The relatively small number of payouts that travel insurance companies must make mean that they have large profits, and thus are able to offer very competitive rates to future customers.
The most important thing is to determine, before even looking for quotes, what level of insurance you think you are likely to need on your trip. This is often an exercise that many avoid, particularly nervous travellers, because it deals with negative aspects of travel. But, just as a lawyer will draw up a contract that attempts to plan for any contingency, you must do the same when planning a trip. Bad things do happen to good people, and that is why insurance exists at all. Take the time to outline what risks are likely inherent in your trip, and try to match your insurance coverage to the level of risk.
For instance, if you are travelling in western Europe, you do not need to be overly concerned with being kidnapped. Yes, it could happen, but the likelihood is so remote that you will probably not need specific kidnap insurance (unless, of course, you are some kind of high-profile person or have a reason to feel threatened). On the other hand, if you are planning to visit Columbia, and hoping to spend a few days trekking in the jungles, you might want to consider a kidnapping provision in your travel insurance. Planning for these possibilities is as good as putting it out of your mind, so that it is not so much dwelling in the negative as it is doing a pre-flight checklist.
Cheap travel insurance is a much-sought after commodity by travellers, especially those who spend a lot of days of the year visiting foreign countries. No one wants to have to pay a high premium for something that is most likely never going to happen. However, insurance coverage is a necessary component of any travel plan. In fact, some visas require proof of insurance before they will be issued. Don't make the mistake of just taking the cheapest plan. Make sure that the coverage is adequate for kind of trip you are taking, and your destination.
